Disability Services Day at the Capitol is less than one week away! Keep on reading to hear about ARRM's conversation with Representative Cantrell and learn more about the logistics of DAC.
Recap of Representative Hunter Cantrell Call-In
Yesterday afternoon, ARRM hosted a special call-in and members had the opportunity to receive some helpful tips from Representative Cantrell! Grassroots Organizer, Madeleine Lerner, asked the Representative about how to best prepare for Disability Services Day at the Capitol.
ML: As a legislator, what intrigues you the most when talking to a constituent?
HC: Personal stories really resonate with many legislators, myself included. It helps to know how something has influenced you. When a constituent is able to put a face to a problem, legislators are more likely to respond.
ML: How can constituents be the most effective when portraying their message?
HC: Other than personal stories, it can be helpful to have some sort of written agenda. This shows your legislator that you have prepared for the meeting. It can also help to make your voice heard and it will definitely make your legislator remember you.
ML: What are the top three things you would do to prepare for Disability Services Day at the Capitol?
HC: First, I would write down a list of topics and questions that I want to address with my legislators. Then, I would make sure that I have an appointment with set up with them ahead of time. Lastly, I would make sure to know where the restrooms and cafeterias are located. I would also make sure to address any mobility concerns. For example, I would ask where the elevators are and see if there are wheelchairs available.
What to Expect
The rally will take place from 10am to 11am in the Capitol Rotunda. Remember to bring your signs and wear your ARRM blue! There are also 20 legislators confirmed to speak! The schedule for appointments was recently released. Most are between 11:15am and 3pm but some are a little earlier or later. All appointments are dependent on legislator schedules. Remember to download the ARRM Events App before March 12th! All appointment times and locations will be posted there.
Meeting Information
ARRM has room 500N reserved in the State Office Building from 8am on. You can pick up materials there prior to the rally. If you can't make it before the rally, don't worry! The same materials will also be handed out in the Rotunda between 10am and 11am.
Most appointments will be held in the State Office Building (100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.) and the Minnesota Senate Building (95 University Ave. West).
