Late last week, the Mankato Free Press published an article about efforts to raise wages for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). This includes a bill from Mankato State Representative Jack Considine (DFL) of District 19B, a staunch supporter of raising the minimum wage for caregivers in Minnesota. The Representative stated, “Frankly, I’m embarrassed we’re not paying them more.”
It also discusses the legislation from the Best Life Alliance, which seeks to close the wage gap between DSPs and other similar profession over several years through progressive increases, starting with an 8.3 percent bump in the upcoming fiscal year.
The article also quotes ARRM’s Director of Strategic Communications, Drew Henry. “We’ve got this situation where supports continue to be very good, but as the workforce shortage gets worse, there are fewer and fewer workers to offer access to these services.”
